2.3 _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__M_e_t_h_o_d
All of the subsystems for IRIS InSight can be installed
using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to
the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for complete
installation instructions.
2.4 _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s
Your workstation must be running IRIX 6.2 or greater in
order to use this release of IRIS InSight.
Most products in the IRIS InSight family require that the
insight_base product be installed. In particular, the
_i_n_s_i_g_h_t__b_a_s_e._s_w._e_o_e subsystem.
If you install the IRIS InSight viewer (_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._c_l_i_e_n_t)
then you must also install _x__e_o_e._s_w._e_o_e, _m_o_t_i_f__e_o_e._s_w._e_o_e,
_d_m_e_d_i_a__e_o_e._s_w._l_i_b, _c_o_m_p_i_l_e_r__e_o_e._s_w._l_i_b, _c++__e_o_e._s_w._l_i_b, and
_V_i_e_w_K_i_t__e_o_e._s_w._b_a_s_e for the viewer to function properly.
If you want to view any of the inline Inventor media objects
then you must install _i_n_v_e_n_t_o_r__e_o_e._s_w._i_n_v_e_n_t_o_r. If you want
to view any of the inline movie objects then you must
install _e_o_e._s_w._g_f_x.
Many of the aforementioned prerequisites also apply to
installing the SGIHelp viewer, _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._s_g_i_h_e_l_p. In
addition, the SGIHelp viewer requires that _w_e_b_v_i_e_w_e_r._s_w._e_o_e
be installed.
- 4 -
If you want to install the online help book
(_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._b_o_o_k_s._h_e_l_p) for the IRIS InSight viewer then you
must install the SGIHelp viewer _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._s_g_i_h_e_l_p along
with the help.
If you wish to install the SGIHelp XHelp tools then you will
need to install _i_n_s_t__d_e_v._s_w._b_a_s_e, and _d_e_v._s_w._m_a_k_e (which are
part of the base Developer bundle), in order to build
instable images. If you simply want to build the samples
without building images then you do not need these
subsystems.
2.5 _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y
It is possible to mount and access books from a machine
running a different version of IRIX. In general, to avoid
any incompatibilities, the client machine should have
version 3.x (or greater) of the InSight Viewer (and version
3.x, or greater, of SGIHelp) installed. In this scenario,
the help for certain applications may not work properly due
to changes in both the applications themselves and in the
documentation (between the different versions of IRIX).
Japanese books cannot be viewed using a version 2.x InSight
Viewer and _m_u_s_t be viewed using a version 3.x (or greater)
viewer.
The new InSight Viewer and SGIHelp can view all books
distributed as part of IRIX 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 or 6.5. The
opposite may not be true (in general, the 2.x versions of
InSight cannot read books published for IRIX 6.3, 6.4 and
6.5).
2.6 _O_t_h_e_r__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
Important: Please read this section carefully. It details
installation information specific to the IRIS
InSight product.
You can install IRIS InSight in various configurations:
+o Client and Local Books
+o Client with Remote (mounted) Books
+o Client Accessing Books from a CD-ROM
+o Creating an InSight Library Server for Clients to
Access
- 5 -
+o Client Accessing Books from Multiple Locations
2.6.1 _C_l_i_e_n_t__a_n_d__L_o_c_a_l__B_o_o_k_s
The default installation configuration is to install the
IRIS InSight Viewer and Library on a single system. The
total size of the viewer (and help book for the viewer) is
approximately 11 megabytes. Installing additional books
requires additional disk space. If you have the disk space,
this is the ideal configuration since it gives the viewer
fastest access to the book data.
See the Release Notes for products that contain books to
find out the disk space requirements for each book.
2.6.2 _L_o_c_a_l__C_l_i_e_n_t__w_i_t_h__R_e_m_o_t_e__(_m_o_u_n_t_e_d_)__B_o_o_k_s
If several machines plan on sharing all the books and help
files via NFS mounts then this is the configuration of
choice.
Note: If you have the IRIS InSight Library (books)
installed on your disk but wish to mount the books
from a remote machine, you should remove all the
current IRIS InSight books (with the IRIX command
_v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e) from your system and remove any
remaining files in /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y before
performing the mount command described below.
To install the IRIS InSight Viewer and Library on a remote
server and access the information from a local client
system, follow these steps:
1. On the server:
a. Install the complete IRIS InSight product image
and all books. See "Creating an InSight Library
Server for Clients to Access" in this section
for further details.
IIIInnnnsssstttt>>>> iiiinnnnssssttttaaaallllllll iiiinnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt ****....bbbbooooooookkkkssss....****
b. Export the /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e directory using the System
Manager.
2. On the client:
a. Install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._c_l_i_e_n_t subsystem (you
might want to install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s
subsystem as well).

2.6.3 _C_l_i_e_n_t__A_c_c_e_s_s_i_n_g__B_o_o_k_s__f_r_o_m__a__C_D_-_R_O_M
Note: If you have the IRIS InSight Library (books)
installed on your disk but wish to mount the books
from the CD-ROM, you should remove all the current
IRIS InSight books (with the IRIX command _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s
_r_e_m_o_v_e) from your system and remove any remaining
files in /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y before creating
the symbolic link described in step 2.
If you wish to use the IRIS InSight Viewer and Library from
the CD-ROM and access the information from a local system,
follow these steps:
1. On the system with the CD-ROM drive, insert the CD
that contains an IRIS InSight Library (books) into the
CD-ROM drive.
If the drive is not mounted, use the System Manager to
mount the drive. The most common mount point is
/_C_D_R_O_M.
If the drive is mounted correctly, you should be able
to change directories to /_C_D_R_O_M and see the directory
containing the IRIS InSight Library (books) on the CD
(for example, a directory called "insight"):
ccccdddd ////CCCCDDDDRRRROOOOMMMM
llllssss
2. As root, create a symbolic link from
/_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y/_S_G_I__b_o_o_k_s_h_e_l_v_e_s to the CD
mount point for the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t directory. You may need
to create the directory /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y if
it doesn't exist.

3. As root create a symbolic link from /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_h_e_l_p to
the CD mount point for the _h_e_l_p directory (if one
exists).
- 7 -
llllnnnn ----ssss ////CCCCDDDDRRRROOOOMMMM////hhhheeeellllpppp ////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee////hhhheeeellllpppp
If you are sharing this CD-ROM mount point with other
users on your network, export the root (``/'')
directory and the /_C_D_R_O_M directory using the System
Manager.
4. On each client:
a. Install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._c_l_i_e_n_t and
_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._s_w._d_a_t_a subsystems (you might want to
install the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._m_a_n and the
_i_n_s_i_g_h_t._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystems as well). For

_A_c_c_e_s_s
For sites with numerous SGI machines running multiple
versions of the IRIX operating system, it may be
advantageous to devote one machine to being an InSight
Library Server. This server would contain all the books for
- 8 -
the various IRIX releases, and the clients would simply NFS
mount the appropriate books and help from that server.
To create an InSight Library server, start by installing the
version of InSight and all the books for the oldest OS
version that any client machine will want to mount. For
instance, if the server will contain the IRIX 6.5 and 6.4
books, then install the IRIX 6.4 version of InSight and the
6.4 books initially.
After the books are installed for a particular version of
IRIX, move the "library" directory to
"<IRIX_Version>library" so that the next installation
doesn't overwrite the books. If you are installing only one
version of books (for one version of IRIX), this step is not
necessary.
The "library" directory is found under /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/.
You will also need to move the Help-specific files installed
in /usr/share/help. For example:
ssssuuuu
ccccdddd ////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee////IIIInnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt
mmmmvvvv lllliiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrryyyy 6666....4444lllliiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrryyyy
ccccdddd ////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee
mmmmvvvv hhhheeeellllpppp 6666....4444hhhheeeellllpppp
Continue to follow this process for any number of versions
of the books (any number of IRIX versions), you wish to
install on the server. If you ever need to install more
books on a specific OS ("operating system"; the version of
IRIX) bookshelf then create a symbolic link from the proper
"library" directory to the OS-specific library directory.
For help books you will also need to create a link for the
"help" directory as well!
Here is what a potential Library Server would look like
after installing the 6.5 and 6.4 books:

After the server is set up, all the various OS-specific
clients need to install the proper InSight client (viewer)
software on their system and NFS mount the OS-specific
library and help directory.
Follow the instructions in these release notes for how to
install for a "Client with a Remote (mounted) Books", except
mount the OS-specific version of the libraries rather than
the "library" directory.
The following illustrates the specific mount commands a
client would use given the sample Library Server specified
above.
For an IRIX 6.5 client:

For an IRIX 6.4 client:

If one mount point is desired (for example, /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e) then
InSight can be run in such as way as to force it to look at
a particular library using the -l <library> command-line
option:

It is possible to access books from multiple locations in
IRIS InSight. This is useful, for example, if you want to
access the books available on the IRIX 6.5 CD-ROM along with
the books installed locally on your system disk. Due to the
complexity of this configuration, this kind of setup should
only be attempted by InSight administrators that understand
the intricacies of InSight book administration. We
recommend that you instead set up an InSight Library Server
- 10 -
as mentioned in the previous section.
To do so involves making the appropriate mounts and links in
the /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y directory so that InSight
will find the books. IRIS InSight assumes that every
subdirectory of /_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y/_S_G_I__b_o_o_k_s_h_e_l_v_e_s
is a directory of bookshelves. For example, you may find a
directory called "SGI_EndUser" containing the end user
books.
Note: If you have any of the European language books
installed then "SGI_bookshelves" will be
"de_bookshelves" for the German version of the books
and "fr_bookshelves" for the French versions of the
books.
Each bookshelf directory contains a set of books, via
subdirectories and files. It is important to note that each
bookshelf is an integral unit and you cannot access
individual books on it via links. However, you can
configure the books available on a bookshelf by selecting or
deselecting the appropriate books through _i_n_s_t.
To add a new bookshelf to IRIS InSight, it is sufficient to
make a link or mount a bookshelf directory in
/_u_s_r/_s_h_a_r_e/_I_n_s_i_g_h_t/_l_i_b_r_a_r_y/_S_G_I__b_o_o_k_s_h_e_l_v_e_s.
For example, if you don't have the SGI_Admin bookshelf
installed on your hard disk and you want to access it
directly from the IRIX 6.5 CD-ROM, do the following:
ssssuuuu
llllnnnn ----ssss ////CCCCDDDDRRRROOOOMMMM////iiiinnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt////SSSSGGGGIIII____bbbbooooooookkkksssshhhheeeellllvvvveeeessss////SSSSGGGGIIII____AAAAddddmmmmiiiinnnn \\\\
////uuuussssrrrr////sssshhhhaaaarrrreeee////IIIInnnnssssiiiigggghhhhtttt////lllliiiibbbbrrrraaaarrrryyyy////SSSSGGGGIIII____bbbbooooooookkkksssshhhheeeellllvvvveeeessss////SSSSGGGGIIII____AAAAddddmmmmiiiinnnn
Note: These instructions assume the CD-ROM is mounted as
/_C_D_R_O_M.
The next time IRIS InSight is started it will now read the
SGI_Admin bookshelf from the CD-ROM along with any books
that were already on your hard disk.
In this manner, any number of bookshelves may be added or
removed from IRIS InSight.

After the software has been installed, you might want to
force your shell to re-cache its list of known executables:
rrrreeeehhhhaaaasssshhhh
You can then execute the IRIS InSight Viewer. It is known
as _i_n_s_i_g_h_t, or _i_i_v for short. _i_i_v stands for IRIS InSight
Viewer. The Viewer process places itself in the background
by default.

2.8 _M_a_i_n_t_e_n_a_n_c_e__A_f_t_e_r__R_e_m_o_v_i_n_g__B_o_o_k_s
The installation of books causes several commands to be
executed during the exitop phase to create a library level
index for each bookshelf. If you remove books using the
_v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e command, the books are removed and the
library level index is updated _a_u_t_o_m_a_t_i_c_a_l_l_y by a "removeop"
command.
If for any reason you believe the library level index is out
of date with the books installed on your system (in
particular, this could happen if a book or books have been
removed by a means other than using the _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s _r_e_m_o_v_e
command), you can invoke the _i_n_s_i_g_h_t_A_d_m_i_n tool on a specific
bookshelf (or all bookshelves) to correct the situation.
See the man page for _i_n_s_i_g_h_t_A_d_m_i_n for more details.
